Real Madrid’s Reaction to Virgil van Dijk Free Transfer : The Truth
Van Dijk's Contract Nears End
The defensive midfielder at Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk , is coming up on the final six months of his contract and speculation swirls about his future. The Dutch centre-back was reportedly on his way to Real Madrid, but recent reports in Spain suggest otherwise.
Real Madrid Eyeing Liverpool Stars
It’s no secret that Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on several Liverpool players, especially the right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold . With the Englishman’s contract nearing an end, Madrid would like to bring him to the Santiago Bernabeu next summer.
Van Dijk, whose contract is on the brink as well, was also rumoured to be wanted by Madrid. However, according to MARCA, the Spanish giants aren’t presently thinking of a swap for the 32-year-old defender.
Why Van Dijk Isn’t On The Hook?
Madrid are deeply admirers of Van Dijk’s abilities but they feel signing the Dutch striker (34 in July) would be not a solution to their long term defensive woes. The club’s central-back options have been plagued by injuries, with David Alaba missing for more than a year and Eder Militao out with a second ACL injury. This has left Carlo Ancelotti’s only real choice as an experienced coach in Antonio Rudiger.
However, Madrid are still interested in a younger defender who can be a mainstay in the midfield over the long term. A short-term solution such as Van Dijk is viewed as a temporary fix rather than permanent.
Van Dijk’s Rebuttal to Transfer Speculation
Van Dijk was not open to speculation when he was asked earlier this year whether he might move to Real Madrid. The Dutchman shrugged off rumours after Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Madrid and focused on his obligations at Anfield.
Van Dijk’s Next Move For Madrid?
While Madrid’s focus remains on creating a younger and more resilient defence, it’s unlikely Van Dijk will be going to La Liga . In Liverpool’s case, the next few months will play a key role in both Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold’s futures.
Keep your eyes peeled for Anfield contract talks to be watched by Europe’s biggest clubs.
