Chelsea Are Focusing on Summer Sale Acquisition Renato Veiga Despite Maresca’s Hopes Chelsea Could Sign Renato Veiga Against Maresca’s Will?

A whole slew of players arrived at Stamford Bridge during Chelsea’s frantic summer transfer window, and one of those, Renato Veiga, may be in limbo. Despite being trusted by head coach Enzo Maresca, the versatile 21-year-old has struggled to find his stride in the Premier League this season.

Renato Veiga Battles For PL Minutes

Having joined from Basel for £12 million, Veiga has featured mostly in cup games, most recently a full match against Morecambe. Yet the Portuguese international has struggled to get his way into Maresca’s plans. While Maresca says he appreciates Veiga, the midfielder-defender duo has reportedly attracted the attention of major European clubs.

Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Napoli are also in the hunt, with Dortmund already reported to have personally negotiated with Veiga. The German club wants a loan deal, but Chelsea are keen to sell. The Blues want to cash in on their summer signing — who is worth more than £20 million — so they can make a profit.

Chelsea’s Interest in Veiga and Potential Off-The-Pitch Acquisitions

Chelsea’s long-term view on selling could clash with Veiga’s need for regular starts in the lead-up to the World Cup next year. Should the young talent leave, Chelsea may consider to sign reinforcements for Marc Cucurella at left-back.

Veiga is not the only summer visitor to have an early flight. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall also seems to be thinking about leaving due to lack of opportunities. However, Maresca insisted that both players are still important to the team for now. "Renato is our player," he said before the Morecambe match. "We’re very excited to have him. We put our faith in him at a critical moment during a difficult game against Tottenham. But the future will belong to all of us: the club, the player, the manager."

Dortmund’s Interest in Chelsea’s Chukwuemeka

Dortmund’s attention is not just at Veiga though. There is also speculation that the Germans want Carney Chukwuemeka. The former Aston Villa midfielder has failed to establish himself in the league this term after injuries under Mauricio Pochettino last year. When I inquired who would be in contact with Chukwuemeka, Maresca said there was no negotiation. "I don’t believe so," he said.

What’s Next for Chelsea?

Chelsea’s transfer policy remains the same throughout a struggling season. And he either stays or he goes is another example of the club’s current difficulties between quality and production. With offers from the likes of Dortmund, Juventus and Napoli, the weeks ahead will see plenty of heaves in and out of Stamford Bridge.
