Virgil van Dijk in Talks for New Contract with Liverpool
It looks like it’s official now. Virgil van Dijk’s management is in discussion with Liverpool to sign a new contract for the 33-year-old center-back. He is in the final year of his ongoing deal, that began when he joined Anfield in January 2018.
Van Dijk's Future at Liverpool
Sporting director Richard Hughes is in talks with Van Dijk 's agent about his future with the club. However, there’s still no clarity on how many years the Dutch international might sign for.
"I can confirm that talks are ongoing, but I can’t say much more than that. We’ll see what the future holds," Van Dijk said in a statement to The Athletic.
Focused on the Current Season
Van Dijk’s focus is on Liverpool and his aim is to win the upcoming matches. “I’m solely concentrating on the next games, and I have no idea what the future will bring. All I can say is that discussions have started, and we’ll see what comes of it.”
33 years old and Van Dijk feels that he is fitter than ever. "Physically and mentally, I’m doing great, and I still enjoy it. Now it’s just a matter of waiting for the outcome of the talks. Once a decision is made, I’m sure you’ll hear it from the media quickly."
Teamwork and Success
The seasoned defender underscores that his success isn’t just down to him. "I’m not the only one responsible for the few goals we’ve conceded. We truly do it as a team," Van Dijk emphasizes.
So far this season, Liverpool has only conceded three goals in eight Premier League matches, helping them stay at the top of the table under manager Arne Slot. This Sunday, they face a crucial clash against third-placed Arsenal in North London.
Van Dijk has already won multiple titles during his time playing for Liverpool, these include theChampions League and FA Cup. Let’s not forget the fact that he has also won two League titles when he was playing for Celtic at the beginning of his career.
