Pep Guardiola Set to Sign Contract Extension at Man City in “Very Clever Move”

Reports are saying that Man City coach Pep Guardiola is planning on signing a new contract with the Premier League champions, some are calling it a “very clever move” by the club.

City started their 2024-25 Premier League games in a great form, with six wins and two draws from their first eight matches. But even with a start like theirs, they currently sit in second place, one point behind Arne Slot’s Liverpool. Liverpool dropped some points in one game this season, the match against Nottingham Forest

Pep Guardiola's Future at Manchester City

On the other hand, City have been dealing with ongoing distractions, which include an investigation into alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial fair play regulations. Due to this, rumours are spreading aboud Guardiola’s future at the club. Many are questioning whether he would extend his stay in Manchester.

However, after a beautiful 2-1 victory over Wolves , Guardiola made it clear that he plans to stay with Manchester City for a while.

“I like my job, as I’ve said many times. I love what I do,” Guardiola said. When asked if there was anything left for him to achieve at Man City, he responded: “In terms of numbers or titles, it is already done, I would say a long time ago. But still, I love coming here in the morning to work. I love it."

He continued: "I am thinking about Wolves and the messages I have to tell the players, the images I have to see, the training I have to prepare. Still, I love it, and this is the main reason I am a manager. When I don’t feel this – and not just at Man City – I will not be a manager and I will not even train. That’s for sure.”

“Clever Move” for Man City Amid Challenges

According to Football Insider, Guardiola is now set to have his contract extended , a move that former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson described as “very clever” due to its timing.

“It’s massive news for Manchester City. It’s just typical Pep, it’s a very, very clever move,” Robinson told Football Insider. “I think it shows his loyalty to the club and it shows he’s still got the hunger to keep going."

Robinson went on to highlight the importance of this news given the current situation at the club. With Premier League charges looming and City not considered the outright favourites for the title for the first time in years, the timing couldn’t be better for both Guardiola and the club.

“There are a lot of questions being asked of Man City. Something just doesn’t feel right,” Robinson added. “I just think with all that noise going on, this is perfect timing from Pep and the club."

He concluded: “A new contract nips all the questions in the bud. It’s a very clever move, and I’m sure that’s what Pep wants – to take the noise and all of the distractions away.”

A New Chapter for Guardiola at Man City?

With Guardiola’s new deal, speculation about his future will disappear, allowing Manchester City to focus on what matters, how they perform on matchday. Despite the numerous distractions and noise off the pitch, City remain delivering, and now with Guardiola at the helm, they’ll battle to stay in the title race for the rest of the season.

To be fair, with six Premier League titles, Guardiola doesn’t have much to prove any more. It is not the trophies that drive him but his love for the game.
